IT'S BEEN TWO WEEKS PEOPLE

TWO WEEKS

AND NOBODY'S COMMENTED ON MY ENTRIES

I HAD NO IDEA YOU ALL HATED ME SO MUCH

Well you won't have to worry about ignoring Shax for much longer. Oh, who am I kidding- you guys obviously don't worry about me at ALL. WELL GOODBYE FOREVER, SUCKERS- I'm starting a NEW journal and it'll be INVITE ONLY and I guess THAT will show you!

In which I chew you jokers out but GOOD )

So effective immediately, Shax.livejournal.com is closed! It had a good run that kinda petered out towards the end, but I'm back, and I'm feelin' green with evil, so come join me at my new digs:

SHAX@PAX2008 PART 3: Never Forget Me... [21 Sep 2008|06:51pm]
[ music | フマぺろ - マドゥーラの翼 ]

GAMES OF SHOW )

I...think that hits pretty much all the high points! I have many more pictures of the trip up at my Flickr gallery; Kou's got a bunch at her LJ Pictures directory as well.

I got back to RDU at around 2:00 in the morning, picked up my car, and headed back home. About five minutes after getting on Highway 40, I went to pass someone going 20 below the speed limit; I put on my left turn signal, merged over, and clicked the signal off... only the blinker didn't shut off. Tried putting my right signal on, and my left turn signal just kept flashing. Basically, I drove the entire twenty miles from the airport to my house with my left turn signal on, and folks, there are NO shortage of people on the road at 2:30 in the morning who'd just LOVE to tell you that HEY, DUDE, YOUR SIGNAL'S ON!.

Turns out it was a busted microswitch, but of course you can't just replace THAT part- you need an entire ASSEMBLY. I could've probably done it myself if I weren't terrified of exploding my car's airbag while trying to take the wheel off the steering column, so I took it to the shop and got it repaired. Only set me back $133, but dang, after a cross-country trip, that kinda stings. Oh, well- it's fixed, vacation's done, and things should be nice and normal around here for the foreseeable future-

AW, MAN. THIS won't end well. STAY TUNED!

SHAX@PAX2008 2: BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE MUU [13 Sep 2008|04:10pm]
[ music | Queen - Dont Stop Me Now ]

And so it was that [info]nunuu and myself had arrived in Seattle, Washington for a weekend full of nerdy fun. First thing to do was to drop off our unnecessarily-huge suitcases so we wouldn't have to lug 'em around the city.

Actually, that reminds me- Kou and I had similarly-sized suitcases, but hers weight almost HALF of what mine did. Turns out I packed almost twice as many shirts, socks, and pairs of pants as she did- and I'd brought along a couple extra pairs of shoes. I like to fly in my sandals, see, so I needed to pack my usual everyday pair in my suitcase, along with a pair of Adidas that are just PERFECT for one particular outfit. I THINK WE SEE WHO WEARS THE SKIRT IN THIS RELATIONSHIP.

(Also contributing to my bag's heft was the CD organizer into which I'd slipped the 20+ DVDs that make up my entire MST3K collection, which I'd then end up LEAVING IN SEATTLE- but more on that a little later.)

LUXURIOUS ACCOMODATIONS )

Honestly, most of the vacation was spent on my feet, walking the well laid-out streets of Seattle in search of fun stuff.

Good Eats )

Speaking of food, I've gotta get together with the local crowd for pizza in about an hour- THE NEVERENDING WRITEUP WILL CONTINUE.

SHAX@PAX2008 2: TOUCH DE DOKODON! [13 Sep 2008|11:55am]
Seeing as how it's been two weeks now since the trip and there's no way I can remember events in a DAILY sequence, we present the rest of the Seattle Vacation in TOPIC-O-VISION:

Adventures in PAX )

Thanks for reading! Sorry this entry took so long to post, but hopefully one or two of you got a kick out of it!

WRITEUP START )

And now, 11:30 PM has arrived, and I need to get some damn sleep for work tomorrow. Only *I* could set out at 7:30 to write a convention report and, three hours later, only JUST get out of the airport. We'll pick this up again tomorrow night- maybe I'll actually get to some of those Cryptic Images in the last post!

SHAX@PAX2008: The Prequel [03 Sep 2008|02:52am]
Just got home from the airport about an hour ago; have spent the intervening time trying to figure out why my house smells like an explosion at a balloon factory.

Got another whole day off tomorrow to try and cope with jetlag, and am I ever gonna need it- it's closing in rapidly on 3AM Eastern Standard Time, and I'm most definitely still on Pacific. I'm hoping I can get my act together enough to at least START the writeup, but for now, have a preview in the style of Paul Chapman:

Don't put your DS in your checked luggage, because Penny Arcade Expo 2008 was the Greatest Vacation EVER!

This summary will contain:

Manly rhythm games.

Girly rhythm games.

The axis of evil.

Seeing forever.

Getting your girlfriend into gaming.

Turning left.

Surprisingly, this summary will contain very LITTLE:

Dirty job but it must be done [24 Aug 2008|04:26pm]
It has come to my attention that one can view the ENTIRE YEAR OF 2008 on my LiveJournal's front page. That's absolutely ridiculous considering how much has gone on in this stupid year so far!

Take this summer, for instance, which has been a non-stop joyride of amazing bullshit. I don't know, guys. I used to do stuff. I liked to draw a picture every now and then, or maybe play a videogame or watch some TV or SOMETHING. Nowadays... well, not so much. And it's all because I have to work for a living.

Your government-mandated WORK SUCKS portion of the LiveJournal Entry follows. )

WHEW! Been needing to get that out for a while. Good news is that we ARE in pretty good shape on all these jobs now, and even finished a couple up over the past two weeks. The contractors still give us hassle every now and then, but that's just part of what they do- we could be two months ahead on any given job and they'd yell at us for not being THREE. Though I HAVE still been putting in (unpaid) overtime on a couple jobs, I haven't felt like I've HAD to do it since late July. It'll all get done one of these days!

And really, as harsh as the past few months have been, it's all about to turn around 'cause I'm officially four days away from VACATION!

[info]nunuu and I will be hitting up the Seattle area for PAX 2008, as well as quality hangouts with [info]ladyfox, [info]fandomgreen and who knows who else. I anticipate NOTHING BUT GOOD TIMES!

More to come but far less bitching, post-PAX in all likelihood.

I ain't pooped in three days, excuse a man [26 May 2008|09:05pm]
So this time last year, I was wrapping up a depression-filled three-day housesitting weekend at my parents' place while they were in the mountains with my brother, sister-in-law and then-almost-one-year-old nephew. THIS year, I actually made the trip with them. Between the eating nothing but meat meat MEAT at every meal, the unpredictable hardheadedness and tantruming of my now-almost-two-year-old nephew and the whole general disagreeing with everyone on every non-smalltalk subject imaginable, I think it's best that these whole-family outings are kept to a minimum in the future.

Travis and family apparently wanna go to the beach sometime in July. The whole family's invited- along with the in-laws, with whom I clash violently every time I open my mouth in their presence. I....think I may need to housesit that weekend, or something.

Aside from that, though, the weekend was fairly nice- weather was great, the vibe was very low-key, and I was actually able to send text messages to and receive same from [info]nunuu for a change!

Tomorrow's my birthday! I get to spend it working all day, of course, but past a certain age, you just shouldn't expect much in the way of hullabaloo just 'cause you've racked up another year. In light of that downer of a thought, though, Kou actually got me a brand-new digital camera, which I received MINUTES before rushing out the door to go to the mountains :O. On top of that, I apparently have a second Mystery Package coming from her, slated to arrive sometime this week. The woman is WAY too good to me TT.

Mario Kart it ain't no joke/Adios, see ya later and eat smoke [02 May 2008|01:35am]
After spending much of the week playing 50cc (and, in the process, unlocking BAYBEE DAYZEE), and inspired by Racewing's epic quest tonight to unlock BOTH age ranges of Daisy, I decided it was probably time to give 150cc another shot.

Didn't look good at first; I'm practically an EXPERT at Dry Dry Ruins at this point due to Sunday night's match, in which I must've restarted Special Cup 185 times. Moonview Highway usually goes pretty well for me (due to diligent observation of (Japanese) traffic laws!), though one of those Goddamn Bomb Cars mentioned in the last entry actually merged into my lane JUST to explode on me.

Bowser's Castle was the true turning point. I hate hate HATE that half-pipe section about halfway through the course; the CPU ALWAYS finds some way to totally dick me over in it. This time was no exception; I spent the first two laps in 10th to 12th place, and I was STILL getting screwed over by items.

(The POW block, I gotta say, is the worst item ever introduced into the Mario Kart series. That said, thanks to the CPU busting it out on me FAR too many times tonight, I believe I've found a way to defeat it- pull a Trick as soon as the third quake hits; you'll spin out as if you clipped a banana, but won't come to a total stop, and I BELIEVE you even keep your item. You'll know you did it right when you see blue rings shoot out from under your kart/bike- and when you don't immediately lose eight positions.)

Third lap, I decided I'd had enough of that bullshit and through the power of UNBRIDLED BADASS came back to finish FIRST.

Tried my best to screw it all up on Rainbow Road; Yoshi had it in for me, knocking me off the track TWICE, and I somehow managed to totally screw up the corkscrew jump near the end of the track and fell off the stage, but my seventh-place finish wasn't enough to knock me out of the top of the points board- got the Gold, unlocked Daisy, and all is right with the world!

Having beaten the hell out of the game, I'll be taking it back to Gamestop and trading it towards Cooking Mama, Nintendogs (DACHSUND AND FRIENDS!) and battletoads lol.

[27 Apr 2008|10:54pm]
[ music | Steve Ballmer - Developers ]

Jesus CHRIST.

Yes, I own Mario Kart Wii. The question is: FOR HOW MUCH LONGER?

I'm on a kart/character-unlocking mission. I bought this thing mainly to play at the twice-a-month game-night parties I host here at the house, and I've noticed these games tend to be a lot more fun when you don't have to waste time trying to unlock every-goddamn-thing in multiplayer.

Were you the guy who decided half the cast/Karts in MKW should be reserved as unlockable material? Why don't you just go ahead and fuck yourself right now.

Anyway! I've spent the last three hours trying to finish 150cc with gold in all cups to unlock- who else?- Daisy. Currently I hold gold, gold, bronze and bronze in Mushroom, Flower, Star and Special, respectively.

Within sight of the finish line on my third lap of Moonlit- Moonlight- MOTHERFUCKING HIGHWAY STAGE, I went from first to twelfth through an unending chain of items and goddamn Bomb Cars.

SERIOUSLY. WHO DRIVES A MOTHERFUCKING BOMB.

WHO WOULD INSURE SOMETHING LIKE THAT?

YOUR GAME IS NOT SUSPENDING MY DISBELIEF NINTENDO. But I digress.

Already at the boiling point, this chain of events prompted me to toss my Wavebird across the room, grab the AV/Power cords at the back of my Wii and separate them as quickly and violently as possible. Tossed the console onto my chair. It's still sitting there, warm to the touch from the fires of the evil contained therein.

I...can't honestly remember the last time a game pissed me off THAT much. I don't think it's EVER happened. Controller-throwing/system-abuse was always the province of my little brother when we were kids; he had a fuse that could only be measured in micro-millimeters, while I maintained patience that would make a zen master covet. What the fuck has HAPPENED, here?

Done with the game tonight, obviously. Maybe tomorrow night I'll sit down with it and try to do it the RIGHT way- skunk everyone in both the 50cc and 100cc classes, work my way up to 150cc like you're supposed to. Will that make me better prepared for the outright BASTARDRY I've encountered at every turn in the 150cc class? Will it at least make me stop wishing gruesome murder on every character with the word "Baby" in their name? This game is driving me to thoughts of infanticide, and I don't think I'm cool with that.

Maybe just hold on to it for Game Nights, even though the characters and karts will forever remain locked?

Or should I just take the goddamn thing back to the store and get my $53 refund?

Good god, was my last LJ entry of substance REALLY that New Year's Day one? I haven't posted to this thing in over two months? Why do I even have an LJ subscription again?!

Oh, right- more goofy icons to use when I comment on other, more interesting people. Should get around to uploading those goofy icons sometime.

SO WHAT IT IS MY PEOPLES. Not a lot going on, so lemme make another long, tedious entry about my house! I found just the most PRECIOUS shade of lilac to paint the walls in the guest bedroom with this weekend; lemme scan in the paint swatch, you'll just plotz.

Kidding, kidding- my time these past months have been spent purely in the pursuit of all things dorky. Let's run down the list real quick!

ROLL ON 2K8 [01 Jan 2008|02:40pm]
[ music | Harry Nilsson - Everybody's Talkin' ]

I saw 2008 in last night over at Carlos & Rachel's house, rocking the faces off 20-odd people with a blockbuster vocal performance of Deep Purple's "Highway Star" courtesy of Rock Band. I like to think that's a harbinger of things to come in 2008- good times with good friends.

2007 YEAR-IN-REVIEW )

On the whole, I'd say 2007 was a pretty good year far as I'm concerned; hopefully 2008 will continue that trend. However your own 2007 tallies work out, hope the new year's good to you. Happy new year!

Christmas 2007 After-Action Report [30 Dec 2007|07:21am]
[ music | Kumi Tanioka - RuLude Gardens ]

It's surprising how much crap can accumulate if you neglect a house for two weeks. Havng spent all last week helping the parents clean and decorate their house for the annual Christmas Party Double-Header last weekend, and having spent all THIS week celebrating Christmas, celebrating Gift Card Cash-In Day, and going back to work, I woke up to find that, between the two weeks' worth of dishes in the sink, the various empty boxes holiday presents (both to me and from me) had been delivered in, two loads of clean but unfolded laundry, and my steadily-dying Christmas tree, my home was rapidly approaching hovel status. Resolved to do something about that RIGHT QUICK.

After a furious day of cleaning and de-festooning the joint, my house is now 70% clean; gotta tackle the studio, my bedroom and the master bath tomorr-err, later today. It's been returned to its pre-holiday state; the Christmas decorations struck and stowed for another eleven months or so, and the tree deposited by the curb for pickup later this week. And for some reason, it's 5 in the morning and I'm not in the LEAST bit sleepy, so hey, how 'bout some 2007 Christmas After-Action report? )

More presents to come, apparently- [info]ladyfox has told me to be on the lookout for a package, which means I need to get hers in the mail tomorrow. Meanwhile, it's 7 in the morning, dawn's breaking outside, and I feel like I can FINALLY get a few hours of sleep! Nothing like a long, rambling LJ entry to wear a body right out- but I'm sure I don't have to tell Y'ALL that!

WOMAAAAAAAN [27 Dec 2007|09:44am]
Holiday Season 2008's on the downswing, the Christmas After-Action Report is forthcoming, and I'm back to work, but I gotta take a couple minutes out of the work day to address a very important matter:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY [info]nunuu!

Your present(s) are, by my calculation, four business days away from you, but having someone as awesome as you in my life makes EVERY day feel like my birthday and Christmas combined.

I learned something today: [22 Dec 2007|07:53pm]
My 17-month-old nephew has an intense fear of Santa Claus. His dad believes it's because the kid's grandfather on his mother's side calls Santa "Satan Claus."

When I asked the mother why, she calmly replied, "Because he's not the reason for the season."

I'm gonna have SO much de-programming to do when this kid hits his teenage years.
